Stand up and get moving!  Those are the watchwords for Active Aging Week, which runs from September 27 to October 3.

Stand up and get moving!  Those are the watchwords for Active Aging Week, which runs from September 27 to October 3.

Active Aging Week was started in 2003 by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) as an international event to celebrate aging and active living. The Council works to engage older adults in wellness activities in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere.

“Active Aging Week is an important part of our ongoing mission to change the way society perceives aging,” said Colin Milner, CEO and founder of ICAA. “It has already positively affected the lives of millions of people.”

Past Active Aging Week events have embraced all dimensions of wellness – emotional, vocational, physical, spiritual, intellectual, social and environmental.

For example, this year at Ecumen Parmly LifePointes in Chisago City, Minn., the entire week is devoted to activities across the campus to encourage wellness. There will be a wide range of events throughout the week from brain games and meditation to a community walk and wellness fair.

The community walk event will be Friday, October 2, 2015, at 9 a.m., featuring a special appearance by Chris Freytag, a nationally recognized health and wellness expert.  Freytag will give a motivational talk and lead a 30-minute walk through the campus.  Afterward, there will be live music, a farmers’ market, a wellness fair and food vendors until 1 p.m.

Walkers will gather for the 9 a.m. walk at Parmly LifePointes-Vitalize Center, 10720 282nd Street, Chisago City, MN, 55013.  The community is invited to join Parmly residents, their families and staff.

The walk culminates a five-day celebration of Active Aging Week.  Ecumen Parmly LifePointes is partnering with Aegis Therapies and the International Council on Active Aging on the events.
