Job Description
1. Ability to coordinate, supervise, develop and administrate the total nursing activities of nursing unit. 2. Ability to make rounds to assure that nursing service personnel are performing required duties and to assure that appropriate nursing care is being rendered to meet the needs of the patients. 3. Ability to provide direct and indirect supervision to all nursing service employees. Creates a sensitivity in personnel toward patient needs and encourages recognition of each patient as an individual. 4. Ability to provide and oversee direct care is given by nursing personnel; assumes responsibility for all nursing care delivered to the patients by nursing staff. 5. Ability to delegate authority, in your absence, to other nurses who then become responsible for the continuity and framework of nursing care. 6. Ability to meet with the nursing staff/support personnel in planning the unit’s services, programs and activities. 7. Ability to develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of patients. 8. Ability to assist in developing, implementing and coordinating department polices and procedures, patient/nursing care plans, discharge planning, nursing objectives and standards. 9. Ability to coordinate, develop and maintain current patient assessments as required (i.e. initial, quarterly and annual MDS; patient/nursing care plans; initial, semi-annual periodical QA&R’s; Tardive Dyskinesia screens, etc.) Attends Resident Care Conferences. 10. Ability to coordinate, review, notify per policy/procedure regulation patient appropriateness of Medicare coverage. 11. Ability to make rounds with physicians, consultants, phlebotomist, x-ray technicians and DNS as requested or as may be necessary. 12. Ability to monitor and review nursing notes to assure they are clear, concise, informative, and descriptive of the nursing care provided of the patient’s response to the care. 13. Ability to notify physician of need for patient assessment and/or change in medical care plan. 14. Ability to initiate, coordinate and monitor patient incident reports. Notifies physician/DSN/outside agencies as needed. 15. Ability to ensure the appropriate delivery of the medical plan of care. Monitors the accurate and safe delivery of all physician orders. 16. Ability to coordinate, supervise, develop, administrate, and schedule nursing personnel assigned to the nursing unit. 17. Ability to complete performance appraisals at least annually, more often as needed, on nursing personnel permanently assigned to the nursing unit. 18. Ability to coordinate orientation program (with Staff Development Coordinator/DNS) for all nursing personnel, in accordance with the established policies and procedures of Grand Village. 19. Ability to initiate, counsel and direct unit nursing staff regarding effective job performance. 20. Ability to attend union grievance hearings and unemployment hearings as required. 21. Ability to promote and participate in staff teaching as necessary. 22. Ability to identify staffing needs and establish safety patterns to meet patient needs efficiently and effectively. Reassign staffing to coincide with special needs of the day. 23. Ability to communicate and work with the DNS and Human Resources Coordinator in the interviewing and hiring process of nursing personnel. 24. Ability to supervise, coordinate and assess other nursing responsibilities to assure the safe and smooth operation of the nursing unit. 25. Ability to assure that established infection control procedures and policies are followed at all times. 26. Ability to create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as calm environment throughout the unit and shift. 27. Ability to implement recommendations from established committees, i.e.: Infection Control, Safety, Quality Assurance, Ethics, etc. 28. Ability to recognize and utilize contribution of patient, family and visitors in planning and implementing patient care. Communicates as appropriate with same. 29. Ability to assume administrative responsibility for Department of Nursing Services in the absence of DNS. 30. Ability to participate in the development of the Center’s budget and oversee monthly budget. 31. Ability to demonstrate an understanding of basic computer skills. 32. Ability to have working knowledge of I.V. technology. 33. Be aware of hazards in your work environment such as blood borne pathogens and chemicals. 34. Ability to complete other duties as assigned by supervisor. 35. You will receive a 2 step Mantoux (Tubeculin) testing upon your hire, and a Mantoux (Tuberculin) screening test annually. Physical Demands 1. Must be able to satisfactorily perform the Functional Job Description and its Critical Demands as included with this position description. 2. Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so the requirements of the Functional Job Description Critical Demands can be fully met.
Skills & Requirements
Bachelor degree with a major in nursing preferred. Must maintain current Minnesota RN licensure. This licensure maintenance is the responsibility of employee. Must maintain current AHA Basic Life Support Certification. Experience in a long-term care setting within the past two years; willingness to obtain advanced certification within first two years of employment; ability to assess resident needs and plan quality care. Ability to work with minimal supervision; must meet the physical job demands of the position. Effective communication and leadership skills required.
