Adult Day Care and Growth in the Age Wave (Can We Call Adult Day Care Something Else?)

Jeff Opdyke of the Wall Street Journal had an interesting article today on the growth of adult day care in the United States.

(We have to change that name.  Yes, it provides care, but my mind goes to child care, and this isn’t child care.   We can (have to) do better.  Some Ecumen communities call it Adult Day Services . . .any other names come to mind?)

Some interesting stats from the National Adult Day Services Association:

 - Demand is growing up to 15% per year.  (You can count on that growing a heck of a lot more with more two-income earning baby boomer families who fall in that sandwich generation).

- At least 400,000 people are served nationally in adult day services.

- The average national cost is $61 a day.  A home health aide in comparison runs $152 per day.

Why not get those attending adult day care involved in deciding what to call that kind of program? We all like to have a say in what we’re doing - and it’ll make them feel more a part of the process.

    You are so right.

The thing with adult day care is it could be avoided in a lot of situations, if more people were aware of how convenient and affordable emergency medical alert systems are. Most alarm systems offer 24 hour a day live operator response along with other services like prescription / meal reminders and wellness checks. I have checked into a Phillips and ResponseLINK. You will be amazed at the affordability and convenience.

Good point. I think you’ll start seeing many more senior housing providers expanding their expertise outside of bricks and mortar and using technology to serve people in their own homes.

  5. Jennifer Says:

I have purchased medical alarms before on a short term basis,, this saved me from admitting my father into a nursing home while he had therapy after his hip replacement! I looked at Responselinks web site, I wish I would have went with them instead…much better deal!

  6. Josh Stafford Says:

Yes I believe that if more were aware, it could change alot of the way the elderly live and feel. Responselink could be what can change that for them!
